Cracked heels as shown in the image below, is a condition where the heels of the human legs looks dries and cracked in no particular form. This could be embarrassing or sometimes lead to low self-esteem if exposed.

Cracked heels can be caused by different factors. Your knowledge of the causes of this situation will help you to prevent it. The following are the different factors that can cause cracked heel:

 Lack of Moisture: Research shows that one of the major causes of cracked heels is absence of moisture. The skin underneath your feet is often dry, rough and chapped. This however has been traced to small number of sweat glands in the skin around the heels. It’s important to note that fat normally supports the skin to become soft, and prevents it from becoming dehydrated. If your skin is particularly dry then cracked skin imminent and can worsen any of the others causes below.

Aging skin: Elasticity of the skin is very important and once it’s loss it can impact on the skin negatively. Thick, dry, scaly skin loses its elasticity with age; hence old age can contribute to cracked heel.

Exposing Footwear: Your footwear has an impact on your heel getting cracked, Footwear with open-back like sandals, or open-back shoes, palm slippersand it likes can allow fat under the heel to expand sideways and increases the possibility of cracks on your heels. Therefore it is important that you take care your feet regularly especially if you are in love with wearing exposing footwear.

Deficiencies:Insufficiency of vitamins and minerals like zinc can affect your heel health. In your meals, ensure that you take balance diet which will essentially contains vitamins and minerals; otherwise ensure that you boost vitamins and minerals in your system to help prevent cracked heels and dry skin generally.

Obesity: Heaving excessive weight has the possibility to increase the pressure on the fat pad under the heel. This over time can cause it to expand sideways and, if peradventure the skin loss its elasticity and it’s not flexible, then it will put pressure on the feet. This can lead to cracked heels.

Genetics:If dry or hardened skin around the heel is naturally inherited, it could be a genetic cause of cracked heels.

Pressure: Sending so much pressure to the fat of the feet due to long time standing at home or work can cause the fat under the heels to expand sideways and increase the chances of cracked heel.
Hygiene: Unhygienic conditions can possibly cause cracked heels. Bath thoroughly, wash your heels and regularly apply moisturizing cream to your heels.

Water:Natural oils from the skin can be washed away by water and can leave the skin rough and dry. A prolonged stay/standing in damp areas, like bathroom, can cause dry and cracked heels.


If cracked heels is developed already, no need to worry, there are other well formulated creams to treat cracked heels. However in the article we will be looking at homemade solution to treat cracked heels. We shall be having 3 sets of solutions with almost the same items.

What do You Need?

  • One onion bulb
    • Knife
    • 2 plates
    • Grater
    • 1 table spoon
    • Strainer
    • 2 table spoon of Coconut Oil
    • 1 table spoon of Olive Oil
    • 1 table spoon of sugar
    • 1 lemon
    • 2 table spoon of Baking soda
    • Colgate tooth paste

SOLUTION 1: Preparation

Peel the onion using the kitchen knife and grate the onion into one of the plates to the quantity that can give you 2 table spoons. After grating the onion,put it into the strainer and use the spoon to press it to ensure that the liquid content of the onion is drain off into in the second plates. Returned the drained onion to its plates and take the liquid away because it is not useful in this process (solution 1). Add 2 table spoons of coconut oil and 1 table spoon of olive oil to the drained onion in the plate. Stir it continually until it’s uniformly mixed. Apply it with you hand to your cracked heel at least 2 – 3 times weekly and send us your reply as comment to this article and share it.

SOLUTION 2: Preparation

In this second solution we shall be using the drained off liquid of the onion used in solution 1 above. Add 1 table spoon of sugar into the onion liquid, cut at least a quarter of the lemonand squeeze its juice into the same onion liquid and then add a table spoon of baking soda to the same liquid, then stir it continually with the spoon to get a uniformly mixed solution. Apply the solution with your palm or anything possible to the cracked heels at least 2 – 3 times weekly and send us your reply as comment to this article and share it.

SOLUTION 3: Preparation

In this third solution we shall be using the same drained off liquid of the onion used in solution 2 above. Squeeze a reason size of Colgate tooth paste into the onion liquid, stir it to dissolve in completely, add 1 table spoon of baking soda to the solution and stir it again until it’s completely mixed. Cut at least a quarter of the lemon and squeeze its juice to the solution and stir it until it’s uniformly mixed which will give you slightly foamy solution.
